"Erratic trackpad behavior" in Apple's MacBook.

As of yet, no one has managed to design a machine/OS combination that is capable of fending off all sorts of user abuse. From geeks to lemmings all users use their machines beyond manufacturer's specifications. The multivariate equation of laptop abuse however, has a common term - coffee/tea. Virtually all people sit in front of their laptops with a drink and/or snack and interact with the device using the trackpad/keyboard. A slight beverage spill is handled well by most modern keyboards. The same can not be said for Apple's trackpad: beautifully designed with "invisible" clickable corners, which sink a fraction of a millimeter when pressed. This design leaves tiny crevices, which will "suck in" (under capillary action) any liquid that finds its way near the edges of the trackpad.
The other day I was drinking tea and a tiny drop landed at the center of the trackpad. As a responsible person I used my sleeve to wipe the liquid off, which only moved most of it to the edge of the clickable area and disappeared in the gap. Unsurprisingly, seconds later the whole hell broke loose: the cursor started to dance around, various icons were being selected at random and I lost control of the laptop. Needless to say the keyboard in OSX is useless if you can not click. After a brief battle of the fingers I managed to shut the machine down.
How to remove moisture contamination from the trackpad.
The answer is short and nutritious - rice. The grains have the ability to absorb moisture from the air. Just spill decent amount of rice on the entire trackpad as shown in the picture below. Use one napkin to protect the keyboard and cover the rice with another one. You are creating an extremely dry environment, thus facilitating the evaporation of the water that has found its way into the trackpad.
Picture
Leave the laptop in the company of the rice for at least 24 hours. The amount of time to wait is of course proportional to the extent of the spill. Hopefully you did not spill more than a couple of drops on the trackpad. Otherwise, you must drain the liquid by disassembling the device.
That's all - no four-finger key combinations to press while holding the power button, no black apple magic. Simply try not to get your trackpad wet! Stay dry my friends.

I think this just saved my Macbook! It was totally worth the weird stares I got from my roommates. I think they thought I was trying to feed it. Whatever - my trackpad works again!

Actually this does nothing! If you SPILL LIQUID on your Mac it may work after drying in the air but the minerals in the liquid still cause corrosion that will damage your PCB traces months after. Also. Putting RICE on the outside of your MacBook DOES NOTHING to aid the natural process of drying. I REPAIR LIQUID DAMAGED LOGIC BOARDS.

If you spill liquid on your Macbook, take it apart and submerge logic board and trackpad in 99& isopropyl achahol. This acts to displace water and clean under the QFN and BGA IC packages. Leave it in the IPA for 12 hours. Use a toothbrush to scrub any crap from the board and then hang them up to dry for a further 12 hours. Mac saved!

This is incredible, like an old grandma technique to fix a modern device! I went through the apple forums, heard stories about 'updates', 'trackpad glass broken', 'genius bar', 'no solution'. This rice fixed it!

This actually worked! I spilt some tea on my MacBook Pro Retina, and my trackpad kept playing up.

At first the trackpad would work, then within 20 minutes or so my cursor would go crazy.

I would restart, it would fix the problem, but a mere 20 or so minutes later, the same problem.

Glad to have it fixed!

This worked for me too! The spill was small, only a few drops onto the edge go the trackpad, but the mouse pointer was immediately unstable. I shut my MBP down immediately and took it that night to the Apple Genius Bar... 5 days and (probably) big bucks to fix, so I left. Your approach made the most sense to me, so I covered the pad with rice, then sealed it up wit aluminum foil and blue masking tape. Then I "mostly closed" the MBP screen/cover and put the MBP in a big zip lock bah with more rice. In the morning, after ~10hr in the rice, I opened it up and started the MBP... It started smoothly and has been running like new for over two weeks. Thanks!!! / Pete

Well, I had a bit of a water spill incident on the trackpad and for a second I thought I was the unlucky guy to get a virus on a Mac (seriously, the cursor started selecting and opening whatever was on the desktop and closing / opening apps erratically). Either that, or a demon possessed it. Come to find out, no virus, no supernatural explanations, apparently some humidity made it to the track pad.
I tried the rice method BUT, even after a restart, the cursor was unresponsive. It took me a PRAM reset (a couple, actually) and even then it randomly misbehaves (like just now as I was typing this. Oddly, after a reboot or a bringing it back from sleep it tends to behave for a while). So, still not 100% fixed, but it does the trick for now.
Well, that's my story. Rice maybe did the trick, holy water wasn't needed. Maybe I'll try that later, meanwhile happy liquid free computing!

I was desperate, and found this, left it for like 12 hours with the rice, and then used it and I was impressed indeed. Like, wtf man. It actually works.

No waiting 24 with rice i fixed this problem in a matter of seconds.
Get a dry towel, blow heat on your track pad to make it slightly humid once you see the mouse move by itself take the towel and rub with gentle pressure till it's working again.
Good luck !

I tried the rice trick after two small drops of water were left in the middle of my trackpad (so stupid - saw it there and didn't even think about it - just closed the laptop and went to work for the day - came back and the drops were gone but my cursor was going crazy). I did exactly as described and left it overnight. When I turned it on in the morning, things were working well. I decided to leave the rice on during the day, just to be on the safe side and so far so good. Thank you!

OMG! Thanks so much!!! Was eating some ramen and some of the soup got on the trackpad... the mouse started moving on its own and it wouldn't work. Quickly googled a fix on my phone and found this and did it instantly. Worked wonders! Many thanks!

WOW! I had to leave a post on this because I am amazed it worked!! I am living in Ho Chi Minh and knew it would be a pain in the ass to get this fixed. Thought I should just try this over night before visiting a store the next day. Woke up and its perfect again! yay!!!

1. My room is now completely covered in rice. 2. I really hope this works because I need to register for classes online tomorrow and can't get into the library and I also super hate the Apple Store. 3. What if rice gets stuck in it instead which given my luck is guaranteed to happen. These aren't even really questions or comments kind of just ramblings. I'll for sure thank you tomorrow when it works but for now we will wait in nervous anticipation

I spilled some water on my trackpad. Like everyone else, it was going crazy. I had no idea what to do. I immediately turned it upside down and wiped it with a cloth. I turned it off just to be safe, and put it somewhere to dry. Later I opened it and it had that 'Computer restarted because of a problem' pop up. My cursor was just staying in one place for a while, so I just shut it down. I have yet to try this, so I hope it works!

It depends what you spilled on it. My wife unfortunately spilled a fried egg on hers (still a little mushy). At first I tried using a tried and tested cleaner (for eye glasses) with the computer turned off and disconnected. This solved some of it but it still jumped around. I then read and took inspiration from some of these posts, in that the egg had solidified in the edges around the trackpad, so with out taking the computer apart or worrying too much about fluid inside I concentrated on the solids. Of course it also depends on how much was spilled or how consistent the egg was when it fell! However I used a combination of a thin knife and thin paper to clear the jam round the edges and then blew it free with another go with the glass cleaner and hey presto it worked again. The issue in our case was that the solidified egg was touching the sides of the track pad and confusing the poor old chap so once cleared the problem was almost totally eliminated, some minor issues but they continue to go as the final small bits get eroded clear over time. Good luck and remember not to panic there is always (or at least most of the time) a solution (no pun intended)!

This definitely works I can confirm!!! Was skeptical at first but after about 16 hours I took away the rice and working just like before! Thanks so much for this! (Admittedly I only spilled a small amount of water but still - incredibly grateful!)

Thank you for your help. This worked for me. I have a Macbook Pro Retina. I spilled a few drops of beer on my track pad and the curser went crazy. After I read this I put rice on the pad and covered it with plastic wrap and left it for 48 hours. This cleared up the issue, thank you.
